The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1820) #31DaysofSpookyBooks

The Headless Horseman is iconic and eerie, and he sprang right from the pages of this timeless short story. Countless adaptations followed (many improving the entertainment value) but there’s still that earnest, superstitious quality from the original. It’s almost a literary tour of Tarrytown, NY and it really does feel like you’re reading about local lore. It’ll make you want to visit the town today, which embraces the legend wholeheartedly. If you’re stuck at home, reading it by evening candlelight with the windows cracked should do the trick, too. (8/31)
